Open meeting, all welcome.

Radical Indy Events September 2015

Tues 1st: A Different Dundee: Building a Radical Alternative for the 2017 local elections.

Open meeting, Chambers East. Panmure Street, 7pm

Dundee City Council are launching a campaign urging us all to ‘Take Pride in Our City’. While civic pride is no bad thing, it cannot hide the problems facing the city: Problems that are likely be made much worse by the latest rounds of budget cuts.

This makes the spiraling costs of that flagship of our new civic pride, the V&A , all the more unacceptable. With the chronic failure of the administration to bring any renewables jobs to the city, and on top of widespread community criticism of the closure proposals for Menzieshill High, are our councillors failing to get the best value for the people of Dundee both socially and economically?

We need to tackle the issues of fuel poverty, our appalling statistics on violence against women, as well as actively assisting the creation of community co-operatives in a range of sectors as part of an over-arching urban sustainability plan.

SeptNew initiatives are urgently required in local politics. We need to take action to build a different Dundee. We need to put community values of co-operation and compassion at the heart of all our actions. We need to end fuel poverty and violence against women in this city. Then, and only then,  can we truly ‘Take Pride in Our City’.

A radical, community-based challenge is required at the next local elections to break the party political stranglehold on power and shake up decades of complacency. We suggest the following strategy and programme themes as a starting point for focused discussion between all interested parties at the meeting.

Strategy

To bring together all radical and progressive political and social groups and individuals in the city to work towards the election of agreed candidates in each of the eight wards.

1. The creation of an independent, alternative media for the city which could give voice to different viewpoints and critique council actions and decision-making.

2. The creation of ward committees to pursue local issues and develop effective links with existing community organisations.

3. Candidates should stand under the description ‘ Power in Community: For A Different Dundee’ and with an agreed city-wide programme.
Campaign Proposals

We suggest the following themes for discussion.

Value & Values

Community

Energy

Women

Sustainability

Tues 29th:   Local Tax Reform.

Open Meeting, 7pm Chambers East, Panmure Street.

Rates, Poll tax, Council tax. Every method used to raise revenue to pay (in part) for local services has been criticised, and the current system is no exception.

The Commission on local tax reform is investigating whether and how the system should be changed again, and is expected to report its findings in November.

RIC Dundee have already made a submission to the Commission and Dr Sarah Hendry will outline the key points.

Alister Rutherford will give an overview of the changes to local government in Denmark and the current developments in Finland.

The meeting will then be able to discuss how revenues should be raised in Scotland, in a wider context of the role, functions, and size of local government.
